Responding to Individual Trauma within Constellation Work

In this workshop I would like to share my findings and learning about trauma emergence in the seeker, and ways in which a constellation practitioner can be trauma-responsive. As a certified Family Constellation Helper, certified
Compassionate Inquiry Practitioner (work of Dr Gabor Mate) and trained in Trauma Research Studies (by Dr Kolk’s work), I have noticed that with trauma awareness increasing, it is more easily felt and activated in the individual soul energy field.

When trauma becomes open and activate in the seeker, there is disruption in the knowing field in a way that needs to be given immediate pause and attention. The personal conscience takes over in a way that comes in the way of insight and resolution. When the seeker is pushed further without acknowledgement, it can re-trigger the original traumatic experience for the seeker, open trauma for everyone else, and can result even, in mental emotional harm. When trauma is detected, given space, and included in the field through staying with the present, the client co-regulated with, there is an immediate settling felt by all. I want to share systemic perspective and ways in which the
constellation practitioner can be more mindful of trauma, my own findings, and working with the emergence of trauma within constellation work.

Exploring possible origins of symptoms, addictions and illness

We are basically designed to be healthy and in this course we shall learn to become more aware when small changes begin to appear in our well-being; little symptoms which, when not attended to, will be ever more intense and frequent.

Hellinger connected symptoms to excluded members of our family systems and to the un-wellness of the soul, but they also arise from certain events in our family system that were not “settled” or acknowledged, and are asking for attention. The symptom is a messenger and has a message for us which we can decipher and attend to. Epigenetics supports the constellation work and helps explain many symptoms and – together with the constellation work may – perhaps – relieve some of them.

There will be some theory and much practical work with exercises and constellations This workshop is directed to laymen and professional constellators who want to broaden their knowledge of constellation work with symptoms in their own praxis.

Ingala and Family Constellations:

Inspired by the Family Constellations method developed by Bert Hellinger, Ingala Robl (already a Systemic Family and Couple Therapist) became deeply interested in this approach. She certified as a Family Constellations therapist with Bert Hellinger and Lorenz Wiest and has over 30 years of experience in this field. She introduced his work to Mexico and Colombia in 1995, and is the Founder and Director of the SOWELU Family Constellations Institute. Actually, she continues overseeing training programs in Mexico and internationally.

The SOWELU Family Constellations Institute was the first institution to offer an academic teaching program of Family Constellations. The Institute also carries out social work, bringing Family Constellations to various sectors of the population.

Born in Prague, Ingala Robl Greis spent her childhood and most of her adolescence in Germany before making Mexico her home, where she has lived for most of her life.

She graduated with honors from the Faculty of Political and Social Sciences at UNAM, receiving the prestigious Gabino Barreda Medal. She has also studied Gestalt Therapy, the Enneagram, and the Fischer-Hoffman Process with Claudio Naranjo.

Ingala holds a Master’s degree in Systemic Family Therapy and a Diploma in Couples Therapy from the Latin American Institute for Family Studies (ILEF). She also completed a Diploma in Brief Therapy at the Mental Research Institute (MRI) in Palo Alto, Berkeley, California, USA. She collaborated with Dr. Ignacio Maldonado at the Youth Integration Centers (CIJ) for young addicts and their families.

As a Core Energetics body therapist, she trained at the Institute of Core Energetics of New York at the Yollocalli Institute and pursued postgraduate studies there. She worked closely with the creator of this approach, Dr. John Pierrakos, in Colombia, Brazil, and Mexico.

She is a Master Trainer certified by Infosyon (International Forum for Systemic Constellations, Germany) and holds a PhD in Family and Couples Psychotherapy. She is also the author of four books published by Penguin Random House, and is preparing her new book about symptoms.

Who Am I?

Because of my parents’ roots, I am of Austrian-German descent, but I have spent most of my life in Mexico. Here, I built my family, which is my priority, and that is why I have an open heart for couples and families.

What I love most is being with people and groups, learning, and teaching. I enjoy walking in nature, practicing yoga and meditation, reading, writing, and travelling. As a sociologist, Core Energetics therapist, systemic couples and family therapist, family and organizational constellator, and coach, with a PhD in Family Psychotherapy and Constellations, I integrate the wisdom of my teachers along with my personal and professional experiences. This provides me with a wealth of resources and tools that I want to share with you.

Resources for Supporting Trauma in Systemic Work

This theoretical-practical workshop provides a proposal of resources and tools to be used in the presence of trauma or complex trauma within the systemic constellations’ framework. The activity is intended for both constellations facilitators and the public participating in the event.

Dynamic dialogue exercises on this topic will be included, first in pairs and then in progressively larger segmented groups, with the aim of obtaining resources and notions that will later be represented and elaborated phenomenologically in broader groups.

The activity will conclude with a proposal of key resources in two dimensions: ethics and technique. Regarding the former, support will be addressed with a focus on consultants, body self-awareness, and somatic self-regulation. In relation to the technique, the use of systemic resources will be reviewed, such as the inclusion of protective or prototypical figures in family lines, or the use of symbolic or archetypal resources in the presence of complex trauma or high fragility.

Given the number of people in the workshop, the methodology includes a strategy that involves imagery and self-observation, with subsequent dialogues and integrated analysis within the groups, to avoid content dispersion and promote active participation of all attendees. Finally, the group will be encouraged to connect with a sense of collectivity and community around the topics discussed, thanks to the phenomenological representation, which will be guided by the facilitator.

Systemic Heart Stones, revealed through the lens of the High Art of Helping.

Through the teachings in Hellinger Sciencia and the underpinning wisdom of constellations, we meet loyalties, blind love, entanglements and the scars of our ancestral and early woundings.

Hellinger’s High Art of Helping is the scaffolding that supports and guides our work in Constellations. The High Art of Helping in Systemic constellations speaks into a philosophy and way of life and the underpinning wisdom of constellation are beautifully woven into its tapestry. It is here that our tender and wounded hearts have experiences of the pure alchemy of meeting and agreeing to what is. Soul expands into a deeper knowing of Movements of Greater Love, Courage and Adulting (growing up) .

As I was going through the conference website, I felt a rising excitement in me as I read about the Mayan cosmic turtle and the systemic hearthstones. I began to reflect on the systemic hearthstones through the lens of the High Art of Helping. I invite you to reflect with me, making space for whatever emerges and deepening into what reveals itself.
In all cultures, hearthstones are central in every home to develop and flourish. Hearthstones support and guide us in our connectedness and love.

Structure and Process: In the session, after a brief introduction, I will introduce the highlights of the Art of Helping. You will then gently move into an exercise in which systemic hearthstones reveals itself to you in an approach, that is phenomenological and unfolding in the field. Further, through an exercise, there is opportunity to anchor the essence of the hearthstones in a somatic way. Meditations and visualizations are woven into the session.

Quotes:

“Systemic Constellations take us beyond the boundaries of love… as we are taken into the service of life.”

My Philosophy

“My work has been deeply influenced, not only by my life and work experiences, but also by my years as a farmer practicing sustainable organic farming. Exploring the analogy, sustainable farming is about finding a balance and about working with both what is healthy and unhealthy, with growth promoters and growth retardants. The fruit of this way of living is that of flowing with natural energies and of being in harmony. I believe that balance and centeredness within our being can only be achieved by bringing harmony to the indivisible body, mind and soul. Holistic wellness and healing takes place when we bring back the balance, transcending our entanglements and moving beyond blame to an agreement with life as it is.”

Pulling Curtains Gently: Does Constellating Systems have a Heart for Complex Trauma?

You will witness and hear how I work with my change seekers in one-on-one, partner, and group sessions, both online and in person. Addressing an individual’s complex trauma benefits from the support of a “systemic village.” Communal holding is profoundly useful when insurmountably painful imprints of early biographical wounds emerge. Their emergence can be met with presence, tenderness, and firmness in equal measure, offered by the facilitator and the “village circle.” Facilitator guidance gently pulls back the curtains from hidden, belligerent, or collapsed survival parts. In doing so, we must avoid re-traumatization by including creative systemic tools when complex trauma arises.

All present in the process need to tread lightly. Issues may reach back to times when nourishment, protection, and guidance in a change seeker’s life were scarce, violated, or altogether missing. Routinely, survival parts resort to
outdated responses: getting through, colluding, (partially) dissociating, and more. For such times, I will share numerous tools and ways of treading lightly: attunement, preparing with initial trauma mapping, use of language and voice, trust-forming comportment, metaphors and stories, procedural pacing, spacing and choosing, creative representation, and more.

Note: This way of constellating is not beholden to classical psychotherapy; albeit, it is profoundly therapeutic. We engage everyone in the “village circle” as resourced temporary witnesses in service of mending community through communal mending—one change seeker at a time.

Quotes:

“We do not comprehend the mysteries of the universe, but we know that relationships help.”
Pádraig Ó Tuama / Host of Poetry Unbound

Short Bio:

Karin Dremel, m.t.s.

For the last 35 years, I have studied constellating, facilitated for 25 years, and taught (my ever-evolving work) for 22 years. Learning from many first-generation teachers has been a privilege and was profoundly formative. My constellator skills are enriched by numerous other schools of thought and study: I am a Licensed German Healing Practitioner (HP), certified in Acupuncture (1993-1995) and Rolfing® (1998-2000), trained in Sensorimotor Therapy (1993-1995), and have extensively apprenticed in Social Trauma, guided by Anngwyn St. Just (CCST 1995-2001), and counting. This array of skills was further integrated (2010-2017) while earning a Bachelor in Social Sciences at MSU Denver and a Master’s in Theological Studies at Iliff School of Theology, Denver. The confluence of apprenticing in personal trauma while developing Systemic (Trauma) Imagination continues to guide my delight and passion for constellating. Since 2022, this self-taught multimedia artist has leaned into artistic talent to develop a visual storytelling tool, which I named constellaging℠; a contemplative form of self-paced, emergent constellating.

Adjetivos encadenados a lealtades.

“I must grow up to hit my children”

Family violence perpetuates across generations. Silence, normalization, and the transgenerational transmission of pain leave marks that manifest in doomed relationships. Through a case study involving acute back pain unresolved even by surgery, I will illustrate this cycle across four generations. I will share a gender-sensitive technique I developed and taught at the Women’s Institute of Mexico City, the Sonora Attorney General’s Office, and Sonora’s DIF (Integral Family Development System).

Quotes:

“We inherit verbs tanned in secrets; nouns stained with dust, sweat, and grief. Adjectives chained to loyalties. We polish consciousness to reclaim our Dictionary.”

“Transforming inherited words is root work, rain work—hard labor. A deep pulse digs through the wilted echo of shadows, then holds, prunes, and strengthens, until, with family consciousness in our skin, the words finally belong to us.”

Short Bio:

Raquel Schlosser is the founder of Transgenerational Psychology®, a discipline recognized by Mexico’s SEP. As rector of IET, she has trained over 3,000 professionals through master’s programs partnered with private universities.
